Presidents Report 2013-2014

Welcome to our 2014 Annual General Meeting and Presentations.

Our Club membership increased a little from last year which is pleasing considering that most other athletic clubs are struggling with decreasing membership. We had 78 members and it is interesting to note that this was made up of 32 race walkers and 36 fitness walkers. It is a pity we can’t get them all to turn up to walk on the same day!   The remainder are parents or officials.   We had 20 walkers under the age of 20 years which is a steady increase in that age group. However, with the exception of Brendon Reading there is a huge age gap between teenage and over 40’s.

The Winter Season saw an average of24members participating each week which was on a par with last year. This compares with 22 for the Summer Season. It is worth noting that 53 members walked at some time in the winter competitions and 47 in the summer competitions.

The Club appreciates the ongoing relationship with ACT Veterans Athletics Club (ACTVAC) in the sharing of the summer track walks on Thursday evenings. Our thanks to ACVAC for their continued support in this regard and for the loan of equipment for major events such as the Lake Burley Griffin Walking Carnival (LBG).

The number of entries this year for the 48th LBG remained stable. The Carnival remains the best attended race walking event in Australia and the club’s only fund raiser. One of the highlights of carnival this year was our new inflatable start/finish line!

There have been many discussions at our committee meetings regarding the future of the carnival. Given that expenses are increasing at an alarming rate, the manpower required and the fact that Government Regulations are getting out of hand to say the least, the new committee will need to consider alternate venues that can be more easily managed.

Our junior athletes performed well throughout the year and we had placegetters in all of the major competitions – Australian Road Walking Championships, Australian All Schools, Athletics ACT Championships, Australian Junior Championships and the Lake Burley Griffin Walking Carnival. Six of these juniors have already achieved qualifying times for the 2015 Australian Junior Championships, namely Gabby Hunt, Zoe Hunt, Ally Durr, Mitchell Baker, Spencer Burns and Callum Burns. Well done!

Our quiet achiever, Brendon Reading, suffered injuries which have not allowed him to compete in as many events as he would have liked.  He did however walk 2 “A” qualifying performances for the 2014 World Race Walking Cup but Athletics Australia, in their wisdom, chose to not send a full team and unfortunately Brendon missed out on selection.  He also achieved qualification for the 2013 World University Games.  Brendon won the NSW Teams 10K Championships and continues to represent the Sydney University Athletics Club at Athletics Australia events and the our Club at Racewalking Australia events. He is currently concentrating on making the Australian 50K Team for the 2015 World Championships and is in Canada training with the Canadian National Team Walkers. We all wish him every success.

Volunteers and officials are crucial to the smooth running of our events and grateful thanks are extended to our judges, officials and parents alike.

The Club remains in a sound financial position despite a major purchase of a new trailer and a new lap top during this financial year.

All of our committee meetings were held at the Burns Club in Kambah who do not charge us for a room, neither do they charge for the hire of the auditorium for the Lake Burley Griffin Walking Carnival presentations.

The following is a list of attendance at our meetings.

Val Chesterton, Robin Whyte, Alice Scott, Geoff Barker 9.

Rod Gilchrist 8. Phil Reading 7 Jane Bates, Mick Saunders 6. Phil Essam 1.

The meeting attendance is only a very small amount of time that the committee spends on the running of the club. Many, many hours have been put in by this committed group of individuals.

The Club is most grateful for the ongoing work of our Webmaster, Phil Essam. I know Phil would be extremely happy to add any relevant news or photographs you may have to the site.

I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation for the support given to me by the committee over this last year. Their dedication to the smooth running of this club was second to none.

Congratulations to those who have participated during the year. Good luck with your future walking endeavours whether it be participating at club or national level or officiating. Again it is all about participation, fun, fitness and most of all, reaching your own personal goals.
